The name Elon Musk conjures up many thoughts, but chief among them is the notion that the man is a genius. Not only has he revolutionized the way we drive our vehicles and think about space, but now he is planning to take over the home-owner market by storm. Rather than making solar panels the old-fashioned way, Musk is planning to not only revolutionize power homes, but to revolutionize the way we think about the aesthetics of solar energy.
In the past, most solar panels were built on homes in a very ugly and mechanical way. Rather than seeming as if they were an organic part of the home, solar panels were almost like giant metallic band aids that were just slapped on top of the roof. Well, thanks to the new technology available by Musk’s brand, he is planning a new product: The Solar Roof. Not only will this product fit organically in most consumer’s homes, but it will come in four different “flavors,” if you will.
This will allow homeowners to not only enjoy the benefits of solar power, but they can do so in a more efficient manner whilst making their home look stylish and attractive. Perhaps even more attractive than before. The new roof works in quite a simple manner. In the old days, solar panels were basically covered in sun-gathering photocells – small pieces that would “suck” in sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. This works quite well for a lot of old school homeowners, because most of them don’t care about a product’s looks – especially if it can save them a bit of money.
But unfortunately, the old solar panels didn’t work as well as they were originally planned. But with the new Solar Roof, the technology works the same, yet slightly different. Instead, a roof is covered in photovoltaic cells, but a layer of film is put over them to help them conform to the shape of the roof. This prevents them from sticking out like a sore thumb.
While the new Solar Roof could cost upwards of $60,000, which is thrice the amount of an average roof, it will help homeowners big-time in terms of reducing costs. In the long run, consumers will save money regarding reduced energy expenditure, but also, they will have an incredibly advanced and beautiful-looking roof to go with those savings as well. And it’s all thanks to the brilliant mind of Elon Musk and his team.
