Auckland Airport chief executive officer Simon Moutter said, “The new pier marks a significant milestone for New Zealand´s gateway, providing the capacity and environment to support New Zealand tourism, travel and trade, both now and well into the future.”
The main ’green’ initiatives include solar panels, solar water heating and a rainwater collection system.
Five Edwards LX440 solar water systems on Pier 3A and a further six Edwards LX440 solar systems on Pier B have been installed on the roof that capture solar energy of 4,840 litre of pre-heating water in the hot water system.
Travellers using the sparkling first floor washrooms can experience hot water that is pre-heated using 40 square meters of solar water panels. This is expected to save 33,000 kWhr per year.
